A Pearland animal shelter employee was administratively relieved of duty, following the euthanasia of a microchipped cat.
According to the Pearland Police Department, Meskers was held for a mandated 72 hours and was scanned for a microchip only after euthanization.
The shelter believed the family cat may have been feral.
In a Facebook post, Pearland PD said, “shelter protocol mandates both the intake officer and shelter attendant to scan for microchips, this did not happen in this case. It is evident that policies and procedures were not followed, and the department has launched an investigation into the incident and are reviewing policies to ensure this does not happen again.”
“Pending the completion of the investigation, the shelter attendant has been administratively relieved of normal duties and has no contract with shelter animals,” the police department said.
