17-month-old Anderson Davis is the youngest victim hit by rapid gunfire on Saturday afternoon, but her mother says her young daughter is strong and she prays for the shooter’s family and her community.
She said, “I sat in a hospital room holding my baby last night thinking about how the shooter was once a baby laying innocently in his mother’s arms and that mother may be mourning the loss of her baby and the life she imagined for him. I pray that our community will continue to do what it does best and that is be a community. A community of support, prayer, donation, love, and laughter.”
The shooting in Midland/Odessa left seven victims dead and more than 21 injured.
During a Sunday news conference, Governor Abbott says he has been in touch with Anderson’s mother and shared a text he got from her.
“She said, ‘Thank you all for praying. This is all about worst nightmare, but thank God she’s alive and relatively well,’” Abbott quoted.
Little Anderson is now home recovering from surgery.
“How we are home with our baby girl just over 24 hours after this tragedy struck is absolutely unbelievable, says Anderson’s mother. How resilient toddlers are is a gift that only God could provide. We know Anderson is getting a lot of attention and with the attention comes prayers so I am thankful for that. I also know, that part of the reason she is getting so much attention is because she is a sweet, cute, and innocent 17-month-old baby.”
The GoFundMe campaign for Anderson says the bullet put a hole through her lip into her tongue, knocking out her two front teeth.
