People Making A Difference: Pearland friends help teachers with back-to-school supplies

After weeks of sleeping late, swimming, applying sunscreen, and wiping off hands sticky from popsicles, we are reminded the lazy days of summer are about to be replaced with manic mornings in Pearland.

That’s right, school is starting again, and parents and students across Pearland are busy stocking up on classroom supplies.

But it won’t be enough.  It’s never enough.

Did you know that teachers spend a lot of their own money to make sure students have everything they need?  According to the Annual Teacher Supply Shopping Survey, in 2018, teachers spent an average of $652 of their own money on classroom supplies.

This week MPN is highlighting two longtime friends who have joined forces to help local teachers purchase their much-needed supplies.

Popular Pearland Realtor, Kathye Rogers Warfield, and Elizabeth Foisner Schaefer are both graduates of Pearland High School and have been close friends since 1970.  Warfield and Schaefer, both honor graduates, wanted to give back to the school district that was so important to them.  Warfield is a local real estate agent who is a Founding Donor and past Board member for the Pearland Education Foundation and Schaefer was a teacher at Pearland High School for 24 years and also taught for HISD for one year.  Warfield credits much of her success to several of her former teachers including Susan Smith Lenamon, Glenda Dawson and Nita Griffin.  Schaefer studied under science teachers Curry, Maeker, and White and taught classes such as AP Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science.

Kathye and Elizabeth took to social media and initiated a drive to give the community a chance to help.  Their Facebook page is called ‘Pearland Teachers Amazon Gifting‘.

Their Facebook group helps Pearland, Alvin, and Friendswood ISD Teachers via a popular social media campaign known throughout the county as #ClearTheList.

Donors can find their favorite teacher’s “Wish List”, purchase the items, and send them directly to the teacher.  Please consider visiting their Facebook group and purchase a few items for your favorite teachers.

School begins Thursday, August 15th, but Jill says if anyone would like to still donate, there is plenty of time to do so!
