FDA identifies 16 dog food brands that may be linked to canine heart disease

On July 27th, The Food and Drug Administration issued an update in its investigation into a possible link between canine heart disease and diet-specifically grain-free diets.

The agency began investigating (2018) reports of heart disease in dogs who ate certain dog foods, many of which were listed as “grain-free.” Many of the dogs were not genetically predisposed to the disease.

In the update issued Thursday, the FDA said it “believes that the potential association between diet and DCM in dogs is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors,” based on the research so far.

The July 2019 update includes the names of dog food brands that were named 10 times or more in reports submitted through April 30, 2019. Most reports were for dry dog food, but, wet foods were all represented.

  • Acana (67)
  • Zignature (64)
  • Taste of the Wild (53)
  • 4Health (32)
  • Earthborn Holistic (32)
  • Blue Buffalo (31)
  • Nature’s Domain (29)
  • Fromm (24)
  • Merrick (16)
  • California Natural (15)
  • Natural Balance (15)

  • Nature’s Variety (11)
  • NutriSource (10)
