Cake holds a special space in many hearts. Cake is there for us on our happiest days — birthdays, baby showers, weddings, and other celebratory events.
That is precisely why the mission behind a movement called the “Depressed Cake Shops” has been so successful, with ‘pop up shops” around the globe raising money and awareness for mental health through the sale of cakes, cookies, and other treats. These special baked goods are often gray on the outside, reminding people of the prevalence of mental health struggles: one in five of us will suffer from, or be touched by, a mental health issue in our lives.
Teaming up to host a “Depressed Cake Shop Pop Up” in Pearland are Counseling Connections for Change, a local organization that helps those battling behavioral and mental issues and The Drink Station, owned by Pearland City Councilmember Adrian Hernandez.
The event will take place on Saturday, May 8th 5-8pm at The Drink Station located at 8209 Broadway St, Pearland 77584.
All proceeds from the sale and any other Depressed Cake Shop-raised funds will go directly to Counseling Connections for Change. Apart from raising funds and awareness, this collaboration also strives to remove the stigma that’s often associated with depression.
Counseling Connections for Change is a non-profit charity that in 2018 served a total of 910 clients with 6,657 service hours and $237,718 in discounted or free services.
