Pearland City Councilman Adrian Hernandez & Lizeth Sitta – Both PISD RISE mentors

Soon it will be that time of year: back to school. But for some students going to school can be a social, emotional or academic challenge for a variety of reasons. That’s where RISE mentors can help fill the gap. The program features Pearland volunteers spending 30 minutes a week mentoring a PISD student. City Councilman Adrian Hernandez, a RISE mentor, said of the program, “the students aren’t looking for a replacement for a parent… they are just looking for an outlet… for someone to talk to.”  Pearland powerhouse personality Lizeth Sitta said of her experience being a RISE mentor, “RISE Mentoring has given me more than I’ve given to the program. 30 minutes per week shows a child that the community cares for their well being. It’s a way to give where you live and make a lifetime of a difference for a child.”

PISD in a statement to My Pearland News contends, “Pearland ISD is looking for caring, committed adults to serve as a mentor for one of our students.  Our mentors are matched with a student that fits their schedule and has similar interests.  We mentor students from grades K-12 based on what age you prefer.  This is not tutoring it is relationship building.  Our mentors commit to spend time with the student on the school campus and during the school day.  They meet one day a week for 30 minutes for the duration of the school year.  Many of our mentors and their mentee spend time playing cards, playing board games, doing arts and crafts…basically whatever the child likes to do.   No weekends, no evenings and no summers are required.”

But is RISE really for anyone? And do you really make that big of a difference? My Pearland News spoke with longtime RISE mentor and volunteer Dr. Hugh Patton of Silver Creek Dental. Dr. Patton was emphatic in his statements that, “PISD wants you… the children need you… you can be the hero in a child’s life.”

PISD further stated that residents interested in helping out can, “Come hear about this opportunity with no obligation to sign up!  There will be an informational Recruiting Round Up on July 31 from 7-8pm at the Virgil Gant Education Support Center @ 1928 N. Main St. Pearland 77581.  You will receive a brief overview of RISE and then you will hear from a parent, a student and the child’s mentor about how the program has affected them. You can also access information about the program from the website:  www.pearlandisd.org/mentoring.  There you can watch a video and you can also access information on how to become a RISE mentor for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have any questions you can contact the program’s leader:  Mandy Benedix at mentoring@pearlandisd.org or you can call 281.485.3203.”
