LEADERSHIP PEARLAND CLASS 2016-2017 RAISE THE ROOF AT VFW POST 7109

Pearland, TX –Leadership Pearland is a national leadership program sponsored by the Pearland Chamber of Commerce with a mission to identify current successful men and women in the area and expand their involvement in community affairs and future leadership positions.

Each Leadership Pearland Class is tasked with choosing a project to benefit our community and this year their partnership with VFW Post 7109 garnered over $28,000 for the Roof Replacement Fund.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7109 has been a fixture of Pearland’s community for over 40 years.  In addition to the VFW, the Post is also home to the American Legion and the Disabled American Veteran Charity.  To have this multitude of services available for veterans under one roof is extremely rare.  Unfortunately, the roof they are housed under is in severe disrepair and is in need of replacement.  Initial cost estimates range from $40,000- 70,000.

Pearland City Council Member Gary Moore had visions of a roof fund and was a part of the original planning committee. The project morphed multiple times as community leaders chose to get involved.  Brazoria County Constable Buck Stevens and the Leadership Pearland Class solidified an event with dinner, silent auction, gun raffle and a dance harkening back to the community events of the past.  Raise the Roof was born.

Over 100 people gathered for a presentation by Congressman Pete Olsen and enjoyed getting to know each other over a plate of Central Texas Bar-b-que and Cruz and Cars fajitas.  The crowd grew to over 200 and danced the night away to The Junior Gordon Band presented by Pearland Pools, Inc.  Ten lucky supporters took home winning gun raffle tickets to be redeemed at Big Guys Shooting Supplies, courtesy of donations from community leaders.

We would like to thank our additional sponsors:

Pearland Chamber of Commerce; Memorial Hermann; Community Impact News; State Senator Larry Taylor; State Representative Ed Thompson; GRIT Realty; Big Guys Shooting Supplies; A&A Cleaning; Pearl Theatre; Pearland High School Junior ROTC; Pearland Town Center; University of Houston Clear Lake Pearland Campus, Bree-z’s Ice, Art and Kustom Kreations; and day of the event auction donations from VFW members.

Gun Raffle Sponsors:

Gary Moore; Buck Stevens; Roy Castillo; Greg Hill; Chad Thurman; Hugh Patton; Trent Perez; Lonnie Grohman; Jeff Barry; Bill Wagner.

From the opening of the VFW Roof Replacement account at Amegy Bank in February, multiple organizations have hosted fundraising events at the Post. If your group or organization would like to help our veterans reach their goal of $50,000 please contact Ron Risdon at the Post.

Our servicemen and women reap the immediate benefit of a dry place to congregate, but our community was strengthened by the fellowship of the project.
